1. Choose the type of contract
Two types of contracts are available depending on your project and the profile you are looking for:
Apprenticeship contract: an employment contract that allows the work-study student to pursue training with a view to obtaining a degree (up to master's level).
Professional training contract: a work-study employment contract that promotes professional integration or retraining.

2. Define and advertise the position
Write a detailed job description including duties, expected skills, duration, and work-study schedule.

You can also contact training managers directly or participate in networking events (Job Dating Alternance).

3. Select and meet candidates
Organize interviews with interested students. The Faculty can assist you in accessing a pre-selection of profiles according to your criteria.

4. Sign the contract
Once the candidate has been chosen:
Draft and sign the employment contract (apprenticeship or professional training) between the company and the student.
Send the contract to the OPCO (skills operator) for validation and approval.

Conclusion of the contract

The formalities vary depending on the type of contract:

- Apprenticeship contract: fixed-term or permanent employment contract. It must be sent to the Apprentice Training Center (CFA) or the training organization via the OPCO for validation.
- Professional training contract: contract written on a CERFA form, completed and signed, then sent to your OPCO, which will examine its admissibility and inform you of its acceptance.

Employer obligations
- Appoint a mentor/apprenticeship supervisor within the company to support the work-study student.
- Comply with the provisions of the Labor Code applicable to work-study students (working hours, remuneration, safety, etc.).
- Declare the apprenticeship tax in accordance with the rules in force.

Recruiting a work-study student involves costs but also financial benefits and exemptions under the rules in force in France.

Remuneration
Work-study students are employees of your company and receive a minimum wage set by law, calculated as a percentage of the SMIC (minimum wage) or the minimum wage under the collective agreement, depending on their age and year of study.

Contributions and participation in training
Most employer social security contributions remain applicable, but specific exemptions or reductions may apply in part depending on legal provisions.
Your OPCO generally covers training costs (theoretical modules taken by the work-study student) according to sectoral financing rules.
Since July 1, 2025, a mandatory flat-rate contribution of €750 is payable by the company when it recruits an apprentice preparing for a Bac +3 or higher level of training.

Possible financial assistance
Assistance is available to reduce the net cost to the employer, including:
Pôle Emploi assistance for professional training contracts with certain groups (e.g., job seekers over the age of 26).
Exemptions from certain social security contributions under legal provisions.
The apprenticeship tax paid by your company can also be used to finance training and contribute to the professional development of students.
